Visibility / Answer engine optimization

Get found when the answer is written for you

Buyers now ask an engine before they ask a search box, and the engine answers with three sources instead of ten blue links. KB Growth works out why your business is not one of those sources, and what would have to be true for it to be.

Independent consulting, not a retainer that reports on itself. You get the read and the roadmap. Execution runs through KB Growth or through your own team, whichever is the cheaper way to get it done.

Buyer prompt

“Who should I talk to about getting our company mentioned by ChatGPT?”

What the engine answers with

  • 01A category explainer on the vendor's own domain
  • 02A comparison page that lists the vendor by name
  • 03A directory entry with matching business details

The engine does not read your homepage and decide. It assembles an answer from the sources it can find, parse and trust. That set is the thing worth working on.

Why the old playbook misses

Ranking first and being cited are different jobs

Classic SEO optimises a page so a person clicks it. An answer engine never offers the click. It reads a set of sources, decides which ones agree, and writes a paragraph. Your page can rank third and still be absent from the paragraph, because the model could not work out what you do or found two versions of it.

That changes what the work is. Less about keyword placement, more about whether a machine reading your business cold comes away with one clear, repeatable, checkable story. Structured facts. Answers to real questions. The same details everywhere they appear.

It also changes what can honestly be promised. Nobody controls what a model says. What can be done is remove the reasons it has to skip you, then measure how often it stops skipping you.

The audit

Five questions we answer about your business first

  • Does the engine know what you sell?

Whether the category, the offer and the buyer are stated somewhere a machine can parse, in one consistent form, rather than implied across a homepage carousel.

  • Do your details agree with each other?

Name, location, service list and contact route, compared across your site, your schema markup, your directory entries and your profiles. Engines drop sources that contradict each other.

  • Is there a source to cite at all?

An engine answering a question needs a page that answers that question. Most sites have service pages and no answers, so there is nothing for the engine to reach for.

  • Can the page be read without running scripts?

Crawlers used by answer engines are less patient than Googlebot. Content that only appears after hydration is content they may never see.

  • Are you present where the engines are reading?

Comparison pages, roundups, forums and directories are disproportionately what gets pulled into answers. Being absent from those is usually the real gap, not your own site.

Measurement

What gets reported, and what nobody can report

A fixed set of buyer prompts is run across the engines on a schedule. The same prompts every time, so the number means something when it moves.

What AI visibility reporting measures, and what it does not
ReportedWhat it tells you
Cited rateHow often your business appears in the answer, across a fixed prompt set.
ProminenceWhether you lead the answer or trail it as a fourth mention.
SentimentHow the engine characterises you when it does mention you.
Sources pulledWhich pages the answer was built from. This is what tells us the next move.

What nobody can report is a guarantee. Answers are generated fresh and vary between runs, users and engines. Anyone selling a promised citation is selling something they do not control. The honest version is a hit rate that you can watch move.

Before you ask

Questions worth asking any AEO vendor

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will mention us?

No, and neither can anyone else. Answers are generated fresh each time and vary between engines, accounts and phrasings. What can be done is remove the reasons an engine has to skip you, then track how often it stops skipping you across a fixed prompt set. If a vendor promises a citation, ask them what happens when the model updates.

Is this different from SEO, or just a new name for it?

It overlaps and it is not the same. Classic SEO optimises for a click on a ranked page. Answer engines never offer the click: they read sources, resolve which ones agree, and write a paragraph. Structured facts, consistent business details and pages that answer real questions matter more here than keyword placement does.

AEO, GEO, LLM SEO. Are these different things?

Mostly the same work under three labels. Answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization both describe making a business legible and quotable to systems that write answers rather than list links. The tactics converge. Be careful of anyone charging separately for each acronym.

How long before anything moves?

The audit and the roadmap take days. The measurement needs a baseline before it means anything, so the first useful trend arrives after several reporting cycles. Anything structural on your own site is faster than anything that depends on being referenced somewhere else, and the off-site half is usually the bigger gap.

Do we need to rebuild the website for this?

Usually not. Most of the first round is structured data, consistency across the places your details already appear, and pages that answer questions you currently answer only on a sales call. A rebuild becomes the recommendation when the site cannot be read without running scripts, because several answer-engine crawlers will not wait for that.

Can you work alongside our existing SEO agency?

Yes, and that is often the cheaper arrangement. KB Growth can sit above the channel layer, set the priorities and hand your agency a specific brief, rather than replacing work that is already running. The point is one plan, not a second vendor competing with the first.
